View Wine ToursStellenbosch is where South Africa first learnt to tour its wine country. In 1971 three pioneering farmers launched the country’s first wine route here, and today more than 150 wineries open their cellar doors across five sub-routes, from the Banghoek Valley to the slopes of the Helderberg.
Between tastings, wander the oak-shaded streets of the City of Oaks, founded in 1679, and admire its graceful Cape Dutch gables. Raise a glass of Pinotage, the grape created at Stellenbosch University in 1925, or toast with Kaapse Vonkel at Simonsig, the country’s first Cap Classique. With Cape Town just 45 to 60 minutes away, it’s an easy and richly rewarding day out.
Stellenbosch is where South African wine touring began. Founded in 1679 and nicknamed the City of Oaks, the country’s second-oldest town anchors a mountain-ringed wine region that is home to more than 150 wineries that welcome visitors at the cellar door. Expect bold reds, Cape Dutch gables and a lively university-town buzz, all well under an hour from Cape Town.
A Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and wet winters, with breezes off False Bay keeping growing-season averages around 20°C.
Decomposed granite on the mountain slopes, giving way to sandy alluvial loams on the valley floors.
