Why Visit Stellenbosch?

Stellenbosch is where South Africa first learnt to tour its wine country. In 1971 three pioneering farmers launched the country’s first wine route here, and today more than 150 wineries open their cellar doors across five sub-routes, from the Banghoek Valley to the slopes of the Helderberg.

Between tastings, wander the oak-shaded streets of the City of Oaks, founded in 1679, and admire its graceful Cape Dutch gables. Raise a glass of Pinotage, the grape created at Stellenbosch University in 1925, or toast with Kaapse Vonkel at Simonsig, the country’s first Cap Classique. With Cape Town just 45 to 60 minutes away, it’s an easy and richly rewarding day out.
