It depends on how you go. Visiting estates yourself costs the tasting fees plus transport. Fees we checked range from under R100 for a short tasting to around R220 for a premium flight. The Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on, hop-off ticket is R350 per person, with tastings extra. Guided tours cost more because transport, a guide and usually tastings are included. Shared small-group tours cost the least and private tours the most. Tour prices change with the date and group size, so we link to live prices on Viator rather than quoting figures that would date.

The hop-on, hop-off ticket is R350 per person and covers the trams and tram-buses on your chosen line. Tastings, pairings and food are not included. A curated, guided option that includes tastings and lunch is also available. Source: Franschhoek Wine Tram, checked 22 October 2026. You still need to get to Franschhoek, which is typically 60 to 90 minutes from Cape Town, or choose a Wine Tram day with return transfers.
Guided wine tours
For live prices for your date and group, open any tour and tap “Book with Viator”. What changes the price:
- Shared or private. Shared small-group tours cost the least per person. Private tours cost more, but on many of them the total is split across your group.
- Half day or full day. Full-day tours visit more estates and often include lunch.
- What’s included. Check whether tastings, pairings, lunch and Wine Tram tickets are in the price. The “What’s included” list on each tour page tells you.
- Pickup. Hotel pickup in Cape Town is common. Some tours use a meeting point instead.
- Season and date. Operators set their own prices, which can vary by date.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a wine tasting in Stellenbosch?
It varies by estate and tasting. At Spier, for example, tastings started at R105 per person when we checked on 22 October 2026, with premium flights at R150 to R220. Check the estate’s website for current prices.
How much does the Franschhoek Wine Tram cost?

Is it cheaper to do the Winelands without a tour?
Usually yes, if someone in your group drives and doesn’t drink: you pay only for tastings and fuel. A tour adds transport, a guide and often tastings and lunch, and nobody has to drive.
Are private wine tours worth it?
If you want your own route and pace, or you’re celebrating, a private tour is worth considering. For groups, the per-person cost can come closer to a shared tour.
