Why Visit Paarl?

Paarl takes its name from the great granite rock that an explorer saw glistening after a rainstorm in 1657 and named the “Diamond and Pearl Mountain”. Rising 542 m above the valley, Paarl Rock watches over farms first granted in 1687 and a wine route that has made Grenache its signature grape.

This is generous country, home to historic names such as KWV, founded in 1918, and Nederburg, established in 1791, alongside relaxed family farms. Pair wine and cheese at Fairview, stroll the celebrated garden at Babylonstoren or try craft beer and chocolate at Spice Route. Culture lovers can visit the Afrikaans Language Monument, all about 45 to 60 minutes from Cape Town.

Wine Specialties & Terroir

Named for the great granite domes that glisten like pearls after rain, Paarl is a wine region of big skies and bigger flavours. Farms here date back to 1687, and today the valley pairs historic names such as KWV and Nederburg with family-run estates known for wine and cheese, Rhône-style reds and some of the Cape’s most beautiful gardens. Grenache is the grape the Paarl Wine Route has made its own.
